Greenville Scottish Games - June 6th and 7th 2008

Highland Dancing

The same warrior class as the Heavy Athletes gave rise to the graceful young ladies you’ll watch competing in the Highland Dancing Competition. The original forms of the Highland Dance date back centuries and were the sole province of the male warrior or clansman. The traditional dances you will see performed have great stories of their own, ranging from a celebration when the wearing of the kilt was permitted once again to the victory dance over crossed swords.

The competitors may LOOK delicate, but the athleticism and stamina required to compete at this level is quite rigorous. Add to that the grace and lightness and balletic movement, and you’ve got a powerful combination. We bet that, pound for pound, the Highland Dancers could out-perform even the heavy athletes
